The pink tax affects almost all of women's health, beauty, and hygiene products. According to The National Library of Medicine, β€œIt is estimated that about one in four US menstruators will experience period poverty during her lifetime.” In addition, The National Organization of Women estimates that women spend $240 dollars per year on period products. For my materials I am using pink cotton swabs. The cotton represents the material that feminine hygiene products are made out of. The color pink of the cotton swabs represents the name of the tax. Also, due to the statistics listed above, I am placing the cotton swabs in rows of 4, and having a total of 240 of them on the piece. Another small detail is the base of the sculpture being made out of metal. This is a nod to the study done that found trace amounts of metal in tampons (The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences).
